Won't Forget

Faded pictures, Polaroids and dust
Dated clothes and laughs and lifelong trust
Scanned in for posterity and digital eternity
And shared for all to see, pictures of us
Pages with the chords to silly songs
Played for no one else to sing along
Looking back, those promises meant nothing to you
Just ink that faded out 'til it was gone
This distance didn't make the heart grow fonder
The lists of my regrets have all grown longer
The forever that we had
Just manifestos in the sand
And when the floodgates busted open they were gone
But I won't forget
There are times where I lose sight of what I've learned
The times when I miss having you around
Some days I wanna sit around the fire with you
And other days I wanna watch it burn you to the ground
I won't forget the way you made me feel so suddenly alone
But there's seven bourbon whiskeys
With my name on them back home
And by number three I'm thinking I
would have your back forever
But by the sixth I only wish I could
erase you altogether

We watch on TV as the president lies
The news tucks us in and assures us that
everything will be alright
The ones come before us completely buy in
Someone tell me who told this country that
national pride meant giving in
And doesn't it feel
Like we're an entire generation
Left out in the dust
Watching our land slowly turn into a desert
As all machines begin to rust
And doesn't it feel like this story won't end
We have the keys to our kingdom but how can there be a way in
When there's no way out
We watch on TV for the next big mistake
We listen intently for news of a
future that has gone to waste
The wave of resistance will slowly subside
Give over control to the endless
descent that has become our lives

Between us just cables
The transfer of data
Consuming corruption
Corrupted consumption
No thinking just breathing
Or drinking or drowning
Or asphyxiation
Of misinformation
But can we choose
To believe our own two eyes
There's nothing left for us
But all the love that died with all the trust
Must we live this way
I swear we're more than just fate or genic code
And what we feel is worth more than what we know
An empty clip and a gray matter bloodstain
Is what's left of my right brain
Extracted conditioned
Diluted destructed
Defeated and worthless
No substance no purpose
When growing up is giving up
Then what the hell was I dreaming of
These compromises don't seem worth it anymore
But can we choose
To resist our master plan
There's nothing left for me
But all the hope that died from all the greed
And I fear it's too late
But I swear we're more than just lost souls and pain pills
And all regret is just penance for weak wills
This sanitized modern life's chipping away
At what's left of my right brain
